After church in Tucson we got back on I-10 and headed east. It was surprisingly green. We had a fun lightning show and a nice windshield shower. License plate bingo is still going strong with Mike in the lead still. We got Rhode Island in Tucson which was pretty amazing.
We had hoped to stop at Big Tex BBQ in Willcox, AZ for lunch, but it was closed since it was Sunday. Safeway was open so we got baked chicken, some salads, chips and Hawaiian rolls. It was a nice Sunday meal. Later we stopped for ice cream and it was surprising the variety of choices. We were able to drive the whole day without getting gas.
We crossed the continental divide and stopped for a picture. Mike gives us geography and history lessons along the drive. I think the best part of the trip is the learning and conversations in the car.
We pulled into Franklin State Park just north of El Paso at about 5pm. We parked the trailer and then hiked up to Aztec Caves. It was a moderate hike about 1.5 miles round trip. The park has left nature untouched and undesturbed. Beautiful landscape at every turn. It was 103, but a nice breeze. We returned from the hike just as the sun set and set up camp. Chili with cheese, peaches and cranrasberry juice for dinner. Mike took the boys on a night hike while I tried to get Scarlett to sleep, but she was determined to stay awake until we all went to bed together.
None of us slept well. The wind gusted on and off all night, whistling through the tent and moving the trailer. I had weird dreams all night about different wild animals and adventures. The park had no water or electricity. So no showers or flushing toilets. We give the park 5 stars for nature and 2 stars for accommodations. At one point about 3am I considered sleeping in the bathroom to escape the wind, but the smell would have kept me up just as bad.
