I chatted with a woman from Texas in the bathroom this morning. I asked her if she has ever been to here before. She said no and never again. I said humidity? She said no, that's everywhere. (I wanted to correct her, but that seemed like it might come off snobby, she already seemed skeptical that I was from CA) Apparently, planes were flying overhead all night. I wondered how she heard planes over the frogs. Fortunately all I heard last night was the even hum of the a/c. She was in a tent.
Last night I had crazy dreams I was back in HS and John Travolta was in love with me and in all my classes (but I was already married to Mike). Might have something to do with sleeping next to Owen so far on the trip? I don't know, but it was weird. I wonder if I slept next to someone else who I would dream about. If John Travolta is Owen's sleep doppelganger, who is Luke's?
Our first stop of the day was Graceland. The crowds were overwhelming. Elvis died is 1977, yet people still travel, wait in long lines and pay top dollar to see his house, his plane and his grave.
We signed the wall and looked over the front lawn at the house. We decided to pass on the $45/person tickets.
Next stop was the Memphis temple.
The stake center across the parking lot had WiFi and my phone picked it up. I guess the church WiFi is true every where. Haha
We stopped at Costco for lunch, gad and road snacks. Mike couldn't believe how much the kids ate for lunch and all for $20.
We headed on our way out of Memphis and dipped down into Mississippi. We drove across the top of the state. It was mostly flat with rolling hills. Not as green as Texas which surprised me. We stopped once in MS for gas and license plate bingo treats.
Eventually we got to Huntsville that afternoon. We explored Monte Sano State Park where we were staying. It was nothing short of gorgeous. Huge deciduous trees and so, so green. Not as hot and humid as Memphis probably because of a higher elevation? We all put on bug spray. Many of us got quite eaten in Memphis.
I took many more pictures with my nice camera at the park. And a few at the campground. It was nice to get in a little early so we could have more play time.
Owen got stuck in a swamp and lost his shoes. He was trying to catch a plate size bull frog and ran out on what he thought was mud. His brothers were wise enough to stop when they started to sink. He went out into 6-8 deep mud and was stuck half way up his calves. Aaron helped him out, but his shoes got lost. Owen came back scared, crying and shoeless. Mike went back for Luke and they were able to get his shoes free. They all wore flip flops the next day so their shoes could dry after we washed them well. I put this memory in my life metaphor pocket for later.
We slept well. And we are looking forward to another night in the same place. It's our first stop we are staying two nights at.
