El Paso, TX to Carlsbad, NM

What an amazing day we had today. We took our time getting up and eating. Oatmeal and cereal, nothing fancy. Then we drove straight through to Carlsbad. The weirdest and most confusing thing about the day was we never knew what time zone we were in. It seemed counterintuitive to travel from West Texas to East New Mexico, but that's what we did. Central time into mountain time heading east. It messed us up, but proved to provide us with quite a lucky experience.

After we got to Carlsbad we checked into our RV park and headed into town for BBQ. It was delicious then followed by turtle ice cream cake and German chocolate cake. Triple yum. I would have loved a nap after, but it was warm and the pool was calling.

After a fantastic swim we headed to Carlsbad Caverns to see the bats. After arriving we soon learned we were too late to see the caves they had closed at 4pm mountain time. We stayed and shopped. Then we drank our weight in Poweraid all sharing one cup with free refills. Our plan was to return to camp and eat, then drive back and see the bats leave the cave around 8pm. But as we drove out we looked at the time and decided to take a scenic loop drive about 10 miles long. We had snacks in the back and no one was really hungry due to a large lunch and the poweraid.

The scenic loop was amazing and we'll worth skipping dinner for. We had deer and wild goats leaping and playing along side our car. They were gorgeous and seemed almost close enough to touch. You could see the fuzz on antlers even. They had all come out to enjoy the evening cool air and shade. All the babies were playing. It was a site!

Then the icing on our day was witnessing the bats leaving the cave. We learned all about bats. During questions and answers they began circling out of the cave. We were all so quiet. I expected a Hollywood Batman type exit, but it was a peaceful amazing exit. Nature doing her thing. 200, 000-300,000 bats exited to eat 75,000 lbs of insects tonight. Wow.

We will see the cave first thing in the morning.

I will sleep well tonight. And hopefully with less risk of being bit by a mosquito! I took my first shower of the trip tonight. Felt amazing.

Can't wait to get home and add the pics from my camera. My phone pics will have to do for now.

Night-night.
