Scene: We were out on a bike ride one afternoon. As Owen and I turned the corner by the school I saw Luke and Aaron talking to 2 boys by the fence. School was out and the boys were there for day care. As I approached this is what I heard.
Taller boy: I'm in first grade and he's in kindergarten. (pointing at his shorter friend)
Luke: I'm in kindergarten too.
Shorter boy: What school do you go to? (obviously not his school since they were both in kindergarten, but had never before seen each other.)
Luke told him his school and the shorter boy told him his.
Owen and I get closer. It takes Owen a little longer to get anywhere, his path is not always the most direct. He's a stop and smell the roses guy, or sometimes crash into the roses guy.
Aaron: (pointing at us) That's my mom and that's Owen.
Shorter boy: (Looks at Aaron, then Luke, then me, then Owen, then back to Aaron) You're TAN, boy! (then he smiles really big) I'm tan too! (He was mixed race too.)
Aaron wasn't sure what he was talking about, but he smiled back at the boy because he knew he was saying something nice and friendly.
I had to chuckle, apparently Aaron has been spending more time in the sun than the rest of us. He has a really good tan.
