Fresh from the tree--Homemade Washington Apple Crisp

Luke noticed apples growing on the neighbor's tree this summer. He loves picking blackberries, it was no surprise he loved the idea of picking apples too. We went and asked the neighbor if Luke could pick some of her apples. She told him he could pick as many as he liked anytime he wanted. Needless to say we have made a lot of apple crisp this fall. Luke has become very good at spotting big ripe juicy apples and he is an excellent helper in the kitchen when it comes to the crisp.

Our favorite Apple Crisp Recipe, it's from an Amish cookbook, "At Home with the Miller Family" The women in the family compiled it to help pay for medical treatment for their father. My sister-in-law Emily was helping sell them for the family.

Apple Crunch (as they call it)

for filling:
5 C apples sliced
1 C sugar
2 T flour
1/4 t salt
dash of cinnamon

For the "crunch":
1 C oatmeal
1 C brown sugar
1 C flour (I use whole wheat and it was yummy, no one noticed--really)
1/4 t baking soda
1/4 t baking powder
1/2 C butter

Bake for 45 minutes at 350.
Super good!
