Dog of God

We have our Family Home Evening on Sundays, since Mike works late Monday nights and gets home at 9:30. No one really knows what day it is anyway. Sunday night FHE also helps us do something Sabbath worthy on Sunday as a family. Tonight we started with the song, "I am a Child of God." This inspired the spontaneous lesson, (they are all pretty much on the spot inspired and last at most 5 minutes) Who am I? I am a Child of God, and What does that Mean? It was actually one of our better lessons. One of the highlights: As we were discussing who in the room was a Child of God, Luke came to Lucy our Large Labernard (Lab-St. Bernard mix) "Is Lucy a Child of God?" Mike and I looked at each other . . . hmmm . . . Mike said, "No, Lucy is a Dog of God." Luke totally took it in stride, of coarse, she's a dog--Dog of God makes total sense.

To conclude the evening, we had family prayer. During the prayer Luke was sure to bless each family member individually, and Spiderman. After all, he's like family to Luke. I suspect Luke hopes Spiderman is his next brother. Maybe then Spiderman would help him find that special spider that turned Peter Parker into Spiderman. Then Luke could stop looking for it and just become Spiderman--finally.

Earlier in the week Luke and I had a conversation about girls and boys as we often do these days. Luke was listing off people he knows that are girls, and people he knows that are boys, just checking his perceptions. As part of the quiz, I asked him, "What is Bruce?" (our black lab)
"He's a boy."
"What is Lucy?"
"A boy."
"No, Lucy is a girl."
"LUCY IS A GWIRL?!!" I'm still not sure he believes it. Lucy slobbers, drools, smells bad, drinks from the toilet, drags her feet as she oafs around, openly farts, has terrible breath--might have something to do with the toilet water, is very lazy, and is just generally not at all lady-like. Apparently to Luke it's more than just parts that makes a lady. I'm counting this as a parenting success. And even though Lucy doesn't quite fit Luke's "gwirl" stereotype, she is a "Dog of God." Another success.

Mike just left with Luke to take the "Dogs of God" for a walk. This is classic Mike--quick on his feet, clever, funny and always anxious and willing to spend time with his wife, boys, and "Dogs of God." Happy Father's Day, Mike. You are my sunshine and I love you.
