A New Generation

I bought Scarlett one of these for Christmas.

I bought it because I used to have one, it's a popular toy that has stood the test of time, and they even have the phone character in Toy Story 3.

K, so here's the weird, totally unexpected part. As the boys were "helping" Scarlett open her Christmas presents from Santa, they opened this one and just stared at it. Then they checked the box and re-examined the toy. NONE OF THEM KNEW WHAT IT WAS!! When I told them it was a phone, they didn't even get it! They asked, "how is this a phone?"

When I explained it to them--this is the part you dial on, this is the part you talk into, etc., they just looked at me like, "Wow, Santa really blew it on that one." and moved on.

I thought about it though and they have never seen a phone like that before--ever. No rotary dials, no mouth piece/ear piece, no cords (thank goodness), none of it. It's a totally obsolete item. So obsolete they don't even know what it is.

And now I feel like a dinosaur.
